getting mic to work in skype

I have a clean install and just downloaded and installed skype. Mic is not working. I didn't check video yet. I see audacious but nothing about a microphone. What do I need? Debian lxde on eeepc 701. The video and audio works on the web/iceweasel.

Did you check ALSA's input settings? If the microphone is detected, it will show up in the mixer.

in your shell, type alsamixer and press f6 to choose your sound card, or your microphone

another option is to do this

unplug the microphone
in your shell, type

ls /dev > before

now plug in your microphone and type

ls /dev > after

and then use diff to compare the two files

diff before after
