Getting errors when installing Mandrake 10.0

Hello everyone,

Well, I finally got sick of rebooting my twice-daily-crashing WindowsME operating system. I had heard about Linux and decided to give it a try.

I downloaded Knoppix 3.7's iso and found that all of my hardware works and is compatible with linux. Yay!

So, I attempted downloading the 3 iso files and no matter which server I tried, I could not get the md5 sums to match. I said F*$# IT and burnt the isos to CD-R anyway.

I ran the install program and it works, for the most part.

I received 8 errors during the install, however. The following had errors and I don't know how to reinstall or fix them.

libkdebaase4-kate-3.2-79mdk.i586
gnome-icon-theme-1.1.6-3mdk.noarch
openoffice.org-libs-1.1-11mdk.i586
eog-2.4.1-1mdk.i586
nautilus-2.4.2-4mdk.i586
perl-sdl-1.20.0-8mdk.i586
vim-common-6.2-14mdk.i586
libpng3-1.2.5-10mdk.i586

I have figured out how to get super user status (I'm learning!) and have figured out how to navigate the directories.

I just don't know how to go back and reinstall those libraries and files to make things like open office actually open.

I thought that I could just go and reburn the isos and do a reinstall, but again, no joy on getting the md5 sums to match. This is after spending the last week and a half trying to download it via ftp. I'm convinced that FTP hates me.

So, I decided to try to install directly from an FTP server and the install locked on me, not once, not twice, but eight times. So I gave up and just reinstalled using the CD-Rs.

So...I came across the same errors. How can I reload those files and get them to work?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

What did the error messages say exactly?

Call it the "root" account from now on ;-)

This is great!

If you'd like a nice Windows-like install wizard for software, from a prompt type in:
# drakconf

If you don't do this as "root" you'll be prompted for root's password which, of course, is better than doing it as root.

What type of internet connection do you have? If you don't at least have a broadband connection, you should buy the disks from a distro dealer. If you're in the USA, I'd be happy to send you a Mandrake Community set at no charge (1 set only to your address) other than your promise to keep trying with Linux until you get it down and a promise to learn Python once you get Linux up and running ;-). What say you?

Well, after a week and a half of trying to download Mandrakelinux 10.1 via ftp (on broadband) and having it stall out, I gave up on it.

So, I went and downloaded a boot.iso for 10.0 and installed via ftp and it worked perfectly! Woo-hoo!!!

So, thanks for the offer, but I now have a perfectly running version of Mandrake 10.0.

I have an 800Mhz AMD Duron processor with 450Mhz RAM, a CD-ROM, a CD-RW, IOMEGA Zip drive, Cannon scanner, HP Laserjet 6p, and a 20G hard drive and it all works wonderfully.

I've gone to Mozilla (Konqueror is ok, but I'm just using it for browsing my drives) for the internet.

I'm having trouble installing Java Runtime Environment 1.5.01, tho. For some reason, no matter how many different installation instructions I've followed, I can't get Mozilla to recognize the plugin.

And the errors I was getting during install when I couldn't get the install to work were numerous...mostly when certain packets were downloading. the install screen would halt and I'd get a prompt that said:

"Error installing gnome-icon-theme-1.1.6-3mdk.noarch. Continue?" <yes> <no>

or

"Error installing vim-common-6.2-14mdk.i586. Continue?" <yes> <no>

But I'm past that point now...I guess the FTP gods were kinder to me in the new year than in the last...hehehe.

Question, tho...would using "drakconf" help me in installing scribus? I couldn't get that to work either.

Thanks for the reply,

Mark

See if you have drakconf installed.

Yuppers....it's installed. It only looks for "packages" tho, the ones that came with the install. I can't seem to get it to recognize a bin file I've downloaded.

This "bin" file was not an RPM at one point? If not, it's not going to see it as an rpm package.
