Question Format the HDD on the laptop for Linex formatting and application installations.

Hello,

I am a 72-year-old, somewhat computer-literate individual. I am now trying to resurrect an old Toshiba C655 laptop to begin the task of becoming familiar with Linex terminology and commands.

I want to format the HDD on the laptop for Linex formatting and application installations.

How do I complete this task?

Respectfully submitted,

Brian L Nolen

What point are you at? As there are hundeds of different Linux distributions, the first step would be to select one then download the iso file and use appropriate software to create a bootable USB/DVD/CD. You then boot it and you will be given the options to create parttions and format. The link below gives a list of different Linux distributions with links to each with more details about it. You can find them by scrolling down the page to find the Page Hit Rankings on the right.

To expand just a little, when you install your chosen distro, you will be given the option to erase the entire disk, and repartition (automatically) for linux. Nothing for you to do in advance in such a case.

I would try either antix or mx linux. Read the installation instructions which will indicate the best way to create a USB live os where you can install it to the hard drive. Usually either Rufus or etcher windows utility.

It'll be slow but usable - I suggest MX Linux, they have lots of user friendly videos, ideal for beginners, & their own forums where the developers also answer questions - they are newbie friendly, which some distros aren't.
