Linux Driver / Software Database


i dont if this has been suggested already but i tink an driver . sofware databse. proving the links and whereto fond a driver for hardware


also a collection of software with user revies amed at a linux view..

i know that i cant find a driver for my soundcard on my laptop.. in fact i dont know what it is.. XP provided a simple driver that run it. where as slackware dont...

i think this would be great assest to the site.. and would possibly free forum space.. where ppl ask for drivers

May I suggest for your sound problems you have a read through this material. Sound is more comples in Linux, and this read will help you sort it all out.

From your post it looks like you are running Slackware. This is not the easiest distro to work with for someone new to Linux. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Slackware. Sound support may not be present in your kernel, and you may have to recompile the kernel to make it work. If this sounds scary, or What did he just say? then you got my point.

There are many distros that are a better starting point for someone new. I started with Slackware also, but switched to Mandrake. I fought my way through getting the X server to work with my old hardware. Got it going, but realized it is a long uphill battle to learn enough to get good at Linux. Mandrake has many GUI tools to get a lot of the common problems configured and running.

Cheerz..

I was advised tou use slackware as its much more configaerable

im a major comupter user with windows and i thought if i jumped in t he deep end for linux i would pick it up okish..

im not doing to bad... but i may try using mandrake as i have that on iso on me comp.. thanx guys...
