Hi, am new to linux. Want to file share with windows xp desktop. using acer aspire one with thunar explorer (I think). I really have no idea where to start. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thnx Rob
in that case you need to have an ntfs partition and mount that partition in Linux (ntfs-3g driver), so you can write and read to it.
Many current distributions (e.g. ubuntu) support this feature out of the box, after installation.
(meaning you can see the ntfs partition(s) from within the environment.. just double click it to mount it, for use.
Thnx. Have tried Samba, but without success. Not too sure of procedure. When I entered smb:// followed by the computer name/file name, in address bar I got the 'no entry' symbol appear and could not proceed. Think I am on the right track but taking a wrong turning somewhere!
i am not familiar with linpus linux. since you are working with gui, there might be something like network places in windows. in ubuntu i have network on my side pane of the file browser, clicking on it shows the files shared in network. since your file manager is thunar try following link, it might help. not sure http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=304131

Can you elaborate on your setup? Is the sharing done on the network?
Where do the files reside originally? Windows ? Linux?
Or both windows and linux are installed on the same machine?
Not a problem. You do not need samba in that case. You will just need smbclient that you should most probably have.
You will need to explore the network just as you do in windows and choose your desktop and it will get connected.
