i am a total newbie to using linux, i recently started learning about it while learning beginners command prompts so i dont know much about linux at all. my hp compaq 6720s came with windows vista a few years back. i wasnt a huge fan of vista, so i took the fedora 6 that came in my school book and installed it over vista 8). only problem is now i cant figure out how to get connected to neither ethernet or wirelss. any help?
Please give us some more detail regarding your network issue. Are you trying to connect via ethernet or wireless?
Do you have a router in place? Has the internet connection worked before?
Be sure to include if possible model numbers of the network cards you are working with so that we can tell if there is something else that needs to be done to make things work.
Welcome to the forums! Fedora 6 is very outdated; support ended in 2007. I would highly recommend installing the current release, Fedora 13. In addition to having the latest software and support from the Fedora team, the current release will probably have better hardware support for your ethernet and wireless.
ALSO be aware that fedora is a research & development distro
and as such not everything will work right all the time
the fedora developers WILL break it, for you , at some point.
for a total new user i would recommend you install Mint or Ubuntu
both of these distros are targeted at the new user .
Wireless: Intel Wireless LAN 802,11a/b/g MOW2, mini-PCI card... these are the hardware specs for my built in wireless card. and yes i do have a router in place. im just extremely new to linux and i know you have to program in order to do pretty much anything.
fedora 6 is a very old and DEAD version and will NOT work on a bunch of new hardware.
any hardware made in the last 4 years was designed and made AFTER fedora 6 hit it's End Of Life
do not use 6 !!!
i know you have to program in order to do pretty much anything.
This just isn't true. Firstly, using the command line isn't programming and secondly, there are distributions on which you can avoid using the command line most of the time (e.g. Ubuntu).
