FC6 on External HD using MacBook (With intel chip)

So, I'm sitting here trying to install Fedora Core 6 onto my external hard drive via my MacBook, so I can keep using mac, but run Linux off the external any time I want, plus be able to hook it up to others computers and run it from there. 2 Problems. First, I downloaded the PPC edition of FC6 because I'm running a Mac, and burned a DVD image. However when I try to boot from the disk, it won't run! Which leads to problem number 2. What version of Fedora Core 6 should I download and burn to DVD to be able to boot into the new Macs with the Intel chip?
I really hope someone will be able to help. If you still don't understand what I'm attempting to convey:

I have a MacBook with the Intel Chip. I also have an external hard drive. I want to run Fedora Core 6 off my external HD while keeping Mac on my actual laptop. Any advice is gladly accepted. I really hope I can get this to work. Oh, also, I've never actually used Linux before, so I'm not sure how it works. If anyone could point me to a tutorial on customizing Linux or just learning how to properly use it, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
