I recently installed FC6 on my 3-year old laptop (reformatted and installed). This is my first experience with Linux, or any OS other than Windows. Thing is, my FC6 sometimes starts up without the desktop. In such cases I normally reboot it. What could be the reason behind this?
Am a newbie, and looking forward to learning more!
Probably the desktop is failing to start -- you can check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and try to deduce the reason. There;s no need to reboot, just login on the command line and type "startx" (no quotes) to start up the GUI.
It is more than likely possible you need to add specific graphics card drivers, list your hardware specs when looking for help here, it can usually tip people off to what is the exact origin of the problem & and you'll get better recommendations.
