External hard disk not recognized ?

I use a 250 GB ext. hard disk for my data backup needs, in a win xp pc. As the xp o/s got corrupted and did not boot, I used a slax linux live cd to boot my pc and backed up my data from pc to the external disk. Since then I am unable to use my external disk in any Windows pc. It shows as a drive but does not list the space used or available. I tried to format but it shows only 'exFAT' file system - not FAT32 or NTFS. How do I get my external HDD to work in windows again? Please help.

I would try using gparted's live cd to format it.
