hi repo
my connection to the internet is thru ether net auto eth1 or etho
this is a single home computer

Did you tried to use wicd?
Seems to me evolution doesn't see the connection.

thanks guys
I decided to use Ubuntu instead of Debian.

just checked and wicd is not installed on Debian or Ubuntu.
Evolution did work on Ubuntu now that I have returned it no longer works
