/etc/fstab and mounting a Pen drive

I am slightly new to Linux and I had one question.

I am using Fedora Core 2, and when I go to mount my pen using the following command:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash

I get and error saying it can't read the superblock.

But, if I try to mount my pen using this command:

mount /dev/sda /mnt/flash

It mounts just fine.

I have also tried having both these command in /etc/fstab and again the /dev/sda one is the only one that works.

It really doesn't matter to me how I mount my pen I am just wondering why the /dev/sda1 option will not work.

Thank in advance

your system sees your pen drive as device sda. sda's are usb devices as far as i can tell. my problem is that sometimes my suse system uses the device sda1 for my pen drive, sometimes it uses sdb1, and even sdc1. so i have to figure out which device points to it every time. i dont hae that problem with my fedora system.

if you put the line:

/dev/sda /mnt/flash auto sync,noauto,user,exec 0 0

into /etc/fstab, then you can mount the pen drive as just a user with
>mount /mnt/flash
