Exclamation Error when installing updates

Hello, as you see I'm a Linux newbie
I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my external HDD and configured my network settings and connected to the internet successfully.
When I connected to internet Ubuntu asked me to download its updates, so downloaded them all and they were about 250 MB, after download had finished I pressed the install updates button and I got this error message:

E: bash: subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault)
And the terminal no longer works, what is the problem? and why? and how to fix it?
Thank you all in advance.
