Well, you can always try rpm2tgz to convert the rpm, but otherwise the install looks like it should be similar.
For applying patches, do a Google search. I did a quick "Linux, apply patches" and came up with a buncha useful results. Just look into diff and patch (yes, there is a command patch). Basically you apply the differences in the patch file to the original code.
