I have a D-Link DSL-200 USB modem for connection via PPPoE on an ADSL connection.

My question is, how do i install the patch? Ive tried ./[patch] and it didnt work.

Also, the tutorial is for .rpm packages. Will it be the same with a .tgz file using installpkg?

Well, you can always try rpm2tgz to convert the rpm, but otherwise the install looks like it should be similar.
For applying patches, do a Google search. I did a quick "Linux, apply patches" and came up with a buncha useful results. Just look into diff and patch (yes, there is a command patch). Basically you apply the differences in the patch file to the original code.
Hope that helps.
