I've just dived in the deep end trying to run a dedicated server. Looking around after a few days I find /var/log/messages is growing at an insane rate with queries that I gather result from hackers trying reverse DNS lookups.

The thing is: I'm not trying to run a DNS server. It's just a little web server hosting half a dozen sites. This being so, can't I just kill the service, or would this hurt me in some way?

Please excuse my total ignorance on BIND and related matters - this is all very new to me.

you have no reason to run bind at all, no. I think I installed my first BIND installation about 6 years after I started running apache websites as an enthusiast.
