Command ls --color=always, can always be always

When I enter the command "ls --color=always" I get a listing using color. The next time I use ls without the color option the listing is again in black and white. Is there a default file or something somewhere a person can edit and change the default behaviour of the command "ls".

in your ~/.bashrc file put
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
or as you say
alias ls='ls --color=always'
