i have taken a look around in the system settings the other day, and without me actually having made any changes (at least as far as i remember), the dominating colour when it comes to marking text or when text is highlighted, e g when i scroll down trough files in nero, as well as in other contexts, has changed from blue to green. i find this visually quite irritating so i would like to change it back but since i don't know how i managed to do this in the first place i don't see how to achieve this. can someone give me a hint?

What desktop environment are you using? Unity? Xfce? Mate? Gnome? KDE? Cinnamon? something else?

with some 30 subthemes. would you want me to list them, too?
Nope. These aren't themes, just headings and icons for various system settings.
To get to the themes, you need to click on the Themes icon under the Appearances heading (which was what I was referring to by "System Settings->Themes", sorry).
Then, change the Controls theme to Mint-X and see if that solves your problem.
If not, let me know what the various themes (Windows borders, icons etc.) are set to.
i had checked exactly what you just mention before i posted the thread and it had not changed the altered colour. CONTROLS is and was set to “Mint-X”, so are WINDOW BORDERS and ICONS. MOUSE POINTER is “DMZ white” and DESKTOP is “Mint-X-Sand” - does that help?

Ok, change the Controls theme to Mint-X-Blue and see how it goes.
yup, you are right. not BLUE, but AQUA was my colour setting. i must have accidently changed from AQUA-setting to TEAL and later to SAND when exploring this THEMES section. could set it back now.

many thanks.
No problem. Glad you got it sorted out.
If you like, you can change this thread to be marked as "Solved".
Also, you may want to edit Quick Links->Edit your Details->Distribution here on Linux Questions to read "Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon" so that people will know straight away what you're using in future posts.
