Centos remote login

I just set up a Centos 5.5 box to refamiliarize myself with the Linux/UNIX environment. (I have been away for awhile) I am using Cygwin to remotly log in to the box. I successfully ssh into the box in my first try. However now (next day) I get a "permission denied (publickey, gssapi-with-mic,password)" error when I enter the password to login. I did not change anything on the box. My thought is that is that I did not log out properly.

you are aware that CentOS 5.5 is NOT SUPPORTED any longer

There is NO software even to install
and NO security updates

all ( most if not ALL ) the repos have been deleted and only the HISTORICAL archive "the vault" is left

please use a current and SUPPORTED operating system and install CentOS 7.4

to put it this way :

basically you installed Microsoft XP to learn how to use Microsoft windows 10

now dose that make sense ?

Where did you even get centos 5.5? Is it an old install CD that was laying around?
