cant connecg with vncserver pls help

I have just installed debian so im new to linux. I would like to remote control the debian gui (gnome) from my windows xp.

I have installed vnc4server om debian and use"vnc4server" to start it.
Gave it a passwd and it is running.

When i try to connect in windows xp with TIGHTVNC with the hostname debian:1 it says:

Failed to get server address (debian).
Did you type the host name correctly?

I cant find what i have missed, can someone pls help me out?

Can you connect to it by IP address? Is "debian" hostname in DNS or windows' hosts file?

on the vnc server, run: /sbin/ifconfig -a|grep inet and post the result. Also, what is XP's IP address?
