Unhappy RHEL 3 with Windows XP - Help please pls pls

Hi all,

I got a Dell Laptop and I have Windows XP installed.

I downloaded RHEL u8-i386-desktop from Redhat.com
after downloading I load the first disc after copying the ISO images to a cd,
I boot using a cd drive, and a welcome screen comes, I hit enter to use the graphical mode, however after that nothing happens, I get a blue screen (

I can get out of it using ctrl+alt+del but cannot install

any ideas please help me, I am stuck here
thanks a lot

any help will be appreciated

thanks

That can have a lot of causes.
Hardware fault or detection, the Boot Media is corrupt, ...
But why RHEL3 if RHEL4 is the current one?
And if you don't have a subscription code to connect to RHN then you can't update.
So if you still want an enterprise Redhat and don't want to pay for it try CENTOS4.4
which is a clone of RHEL4.

thanks,

I did try the text mode it did not help

actually I want to run Cadence ( an EDA) software which officially supports only RHEL 3 and I do not have a subscription with Red Hat currently

had Fedora 5 before, but was having issues running the Cadence software, is Centos a good idea?

please advise, I am stuck and had to be up running the Cadence software

thanks a lot

I appreciate the advise

Yeah, especially if it's a brand new laptop with something as old as REL 3, it looks like some sort of hardware incompatibility. I'd check the HCL.

hi

thanks all for the input
another thing I found about the comp I am using it is actually my office one so somebody else used it before

they had fedora5 installed and running and when I got this, it was uninstalled and GRUB also was installed, will that be an issue, should I need to install GRUB bootloader or is that specific to my hardware or laptop

thanks a lot

regards

I SHOULDN'T be a problem. It still sounds like a hardware compatibility issue.

if rhel4 is supported, then give centos 4.4 a try. forget about this grub blahfassel stuff, and this old rhel3 and fedora thing.
Download centos4.4 move on with the DVD and boot your Dell Notebook,
visit linux-on-laptops or tuxmobile for hints.
