cannot mount external hard drive

I am unable to mount an external hard drive. I have tried dmesg | grep usb, tail /var/log/messages, mounting /dev/sda1 and whole lot of stuff, but I cannot seem to locate where it is in /dev. Anyway, here is the output of the commands I mentioned, becuase I am pretty sure they do not contain the assignment of the drive, but I am not positive.

dmesg | grep usb
Code:
usbcore: registered new driver usbfs
usbcore: registered new driver hub
usb 2-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage
input: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1
usbcore: registered new driver usbhid

usbcore: registered new driver touchkitusb
usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb-storage: device found at 3
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb-storage: device scan complete

dmesg | grep hd

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbmount
Code:
/dev/sda1 is not a valid block device

Anyway, I would really really appreciate any help.

PS: Every time I mount it, /var/log/messages seems to increase the number the device is found at (in the case above it is 3) and I have no clue what it means or whether or not that info would help anyone.

What distro?
USB drive?
Formatted?

Most distros automatically detect a new usb device and mount it somewhere (eg /media)

can you see it with fdisk? type "fdisk /dev/sda" (or maybe sdb, sdc, depending on your setup.) If fdisk finds it, then type "p" to see the partitions.

mount /dev/sda1 <somewhere> does not work if the drive is not yet partitioned.
