[SOLVED] can not see mouse pointer on GUI

using emachine w3118,AMD Sempron 3100+ processor, Nvidia Geforce 6100 GPU video,
I get a mouse pointer during boot up ,but with GUI running no mouse pointer visible.
If I move the mouse and watch the desktop icons I can see highlight when I am over one and can click the mouse and it will perform like I would expect it too.

here's some option to set a software cursor if the cursor is not generated. What exactly do you see instead of a cursor? Nothing at all? I'd suspect the mouse driver in X.

Are you able to use the mouse pointer during start-up, moving it around, and all of that. In the graphical user interface, does the keyboard work? It could be a bad driver, or a bad mouse.
