mouse pointer moves up upon any mouse action in slackware 10.2

hi. well.. i decided to make an account here after a few weeks of this annoying problem. see.. what happens is after a random amount of time.. my pointer starts acting up... it moves upward when i click any mouse button... then moves upward more when i depress the button.. it also moves upward when i move the mouse, but it still goes in its general direction.. just with a more upward path.. i restart x and the problem is fixed.... for a random amount of time.... as you can imagine.. this would get very annoying... ohh.. and as the subject states.. im using slackware 10.2.. im also using xfce4 im not on that computer right now.. so i dont know any of the other details right now.. but i would be happy to give more upon request. thank you.

oh yeah.. forgot to mention.. the computer is a laptop using a touchpad.

Have you tried running a liveCD distro on the laptop? This would tell you whether there's a hardware problem. If the same behaviour doesn't occur when running a liveCD, maybe we can come up with some suggestions.
