can not login as root

Heya,
I'm using red hat 9, which has been fine for a few weeks now. Theres one user- and the root-account. I use user and 'su' to root when needed.

Now for some reason i can't anymore login as root from the initial login-prompt (gui-mode, kde). It tell's me user-name and password don't match, check if you have caps-lock...

Still it's possible to login as root with 'su'. I'm totally clueless here. In the root password theres one scandinavian character, which I imagine could be a problem if the login-prompt uses a narrower char-set or something. Changing language for the root didn't seem to help though.

Any one have an idea whats going on?

Check your /etc/securetty file and make sure nothing is disabled for too to login to a console, etc.

Sounds like your login (either GDM or KDM) is not allowing you to log in as root from the screen. Try configuring the login once your in as user. They should be in the menu for both Gnome and KDE. Good luck.

After all i managed to find what it was all about and that was the scandinavian character in my root password. After replacing it every things fine again

Almost looks like a little slip in Red Hats Testing to allow newbies getting confused like this I mean it's all the better password with weird chars, aight?

Anyway thanks for the help Tricky and Tez
