can't see EMC luns using Emulex LPe 1205-HP HBA

I'm trying to install Redhat 5.3 on a couple of Proliant BL460c G6 blades and having trouble seeing luns on the SAN. SAN is EMC symmetrix DMX3000. The blades can see sg0 and sg1 and /proc/scsi/scsi shows that it can see that the SAN is a symmetrix. But no /dev/sd* files. In hbanyware I can see luns listed, but if I click on any of them it reports n/a for every field. I've tried the following -

Used the native emulex driver from the RH 5.3 kernel.
Installed the latest EMC driver from the emulex website.
Installed the latest EMC driver from the HP website (this turned out to not be installable on RH 5.3, so I reinstalled the box with 5.2 and installed this, but still got the same result as above).
Installed the latest emulex driver from the emulex website.
Rebuilt the box as a windows server - this can see the luns.
Rebuilt the box again as redhat 5.3 -- still no luck.

Our san manager knows that he has to set up the storage as unix versus windows, he did this when we rebuilt the box as a windows box, switched it back to unix when it became a unix box again. I'm convinced that this is a driver issue. It looks like the drivers that are available from emulex and within the Redhat 5.3 kernel are the same for both the emulex 1105 HBA (4GB) and 1205 (8 GB). Or the drivers are for the 1105 and work for the 1105, but don't work for the 1205. Am I missing something here? Does anyone have any thoughts on anything else I can try? Has anyone gotten this configuration working successfully?
