Please don't post a new question into an existing thread, even if it's similar. Your problem may be different and new thread helps people find unanswered questions. Thanks.

Are you able to compile any program? From your error message it looks as if you don't have gcc installed. What happens when you run the command 'gcc'. If it doesn't exist - apt-get install gcc

Fair enough.

It isn't as simple as a lack of a compiler unfortunately (I've compiled a few bits and bobs on this install). I think the script isn't looking for gcc, that may be the issue. I'll have a poke though it and see if I can sort something. If I'm still struggling tomorrow I'll make another thread.

Thanks for the help.

It's looking for g++, actually. If it's available, check $CFLAGS and $CPPFLAGS environmental variables. If they're incorrect, you may get such result.

I'm now going to eat my words. I was assuming that the program I was trying to compile needed a C compiler. ie. that gcc was what it needed and seeing as I have that installed why wasn't the silly thing working. It didn't, it wanted a c++ compiler, which doesn't seem to come in the standard debian install (well not in mine at least). I installed g++ and it all works fine.

Sorry to have dragged this thread back up to the top of the forums again.

Thanks Mara for your help.
