Are you sure you put it back together properly - something jammed perhaps, or connector left unplugged? Not sure that I can offer any further advice on this, apart from contacting Brother. (I've never experienced this error, and don't own this model either.)

you are correct - a sneaky front panel connector had managed to escape my attention. I took the machine down again (I'm getting good at this) and put the plug/connector in the correct place. Reassembled and wallah everything electronically working ok. - NOTE I SAID ELECTRONICALLY
Then tried to print:
"paper not fed" error !!!!!!!!!
Euphoria back to zero again !!!!!
Just won't pick up paper ......doesn't even fully leave the tray.
However, since you have taken this machine apart, you'll have to explore other potential assembly issues. I note that they have this to say about "No Paper Fed":

Hi Ferrari.......BIG SURPRISE - to me as well !!!! I took the steps to clean the numerous rollers - although none looked like they needed cleaning - with just a dry tea-towellling. Retried and came across the relatively NEW fault of Paper Jam (Rear) with no apparent jam there. Then tried with A4 glossy paper - which I have almost always used for my print jobs, no luck I then tried some ordinary A4 80gms non-glossy and hey I got a print....!!!! Celebration times. I retried glossy no luck kept "paper jam" (rear) I then mixed up the papers A4 non glossy and A4 glossy and hey bingo got this to fool the machine.....it worked printed ten (mixed) prints. Then the big test A3 glossy again. Hey it worked......so I'm like a kid in a candy store again! All back working and the self-satisfaction of doing something I'd never done before. Taken a complex bit of machinery to bits - and more importantly put it back together again..........anyone looking for a printer mechanic ?????????
Thanks again Ferrari you did a great job with your info AND your from far-away encouragement.

Follow up on 100949football's Brother MFC hard reset problem. I have a Brother MFC-J6920DW that just went into that mode and after an hour or so I just figured out the hard reset. You won't believe it but it works.
1. Unplug the printer for at least 10 minutes.
2. Take out all printer trays.
3. Hold down the on/off button
4. Plug in the power - when you hear the start up music, stop pressing the power button.
5. Act on all prompts - in my case it said no station ID and offer Close. So I pressed close.
6. "Insert paper trays" - so I did.
7. My low ink screen came up - pressed the red X
8. All good.
I think that "All functions will be disabled" is someone's poorly programmed error handler that has rolled all the way to the top!
You have probably thrown the printer away by now, but if so, the solution is for other to find.

Hi Robert many thanks for that.
I still have the printer - which is ok now - along with a 6490 that is now giving me print "quality" problems. Your solution above doesn't work on my machine I'm afraid. However the 6490 was printing perfectly and giving me more than adequate quality colour prints for posters I was printing. Then, problem occurred with severe quality problems on posters with photographs - they came out very heavily smudged and basically useless. Cleaning the machine and doing "test" results show ALL the nozzles etc as perfect. Printing test pages work fine yet when I try printing the posters again the quality is terrible. I've tried cleaning with no success. Went on to Brother's technical lines "on-line chat" and they are a total waste of space / time / energy....their solution contact a local specialist repair at cost of £125 plus VAT !!!!!! My J5910 printer prints the posters ok (but not as good quality previously with the 6490) and the 6490 continues to produce basically rubbish! Printing all colours individually (i.e. in thick lines) shows result fine but when I try a colour photograph poster it is terrible. ????? Hope you, or anyone else may have an answer........mebe "ferrari" Regards Bill

I did have to remove both paper trays before powering up, which was a bit of a surprise. But if the way to get a hard reset is "hold the power-on button down with both paper trays removed", then so be it. That is the way to get a hard reset. I have had the same problem with a similar model at work, so if it is still around, I will try that method there as well!. Many tanks.
