Angry Booting to CLI on RHEL 6 when GUI is loaded

Trying to boot to CLI on New RHEL server. Person who started server build left and did not document Passwords, configs. etc. Trying yo get yo CLI to change Root and other profile passwds. He loaded a GUI I am not familiar with and might be GNOME but I am not familiar. Ti does not give a menu coming up. Boots into the X-Window login. Have not been able to find a way to stop it. Anyone know what I need to stop it?

Load RHEL installer or rescue CD, mount / partition if not mounted automagically, change root password, change default runlevel.
