fsck

this is probably single user mode - it lets you run fsck on the root system while it is unmounted. run fsck from the # prompt like this: fsck -a /dev/hda1
if hda1 is your linux partition (in this example, primary master, first partition) use fdisk -l to get a list of partitions on your system

Ok, # is not a number of file, this is your shell prompt. I remember the story in linuxgazette at http://www.linuxgazette.com where the guy first installed Linux on his system, and when it booted he saw bash#, he said that he was smart enough not to call the RH help desk for his bash number as he thought it is a part of registration of the product.
