We tried including initrd precisely for the reason that ext3 filesystem may be compiled as a module in the kernel. You can get leads about the error from the grub website.

Go to http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/
and check out the grub manual. There's a specific section there about errors and what they mean. That might give you leads.

Hi once more,

I checked out the GRUB manual, and this error is not listed in it, and it offers no hints. This, as well as the fact that LILO reports the same error, makes me think that the issue is not with GRUB at all, but rather the initrd file. Could there be something wrong with it? Is there a file or a directory missing? Can one download new ones? Any ideas? Thanks,

-Felix

EDIT: I should add that before this error occurs, it says it has loaded the ext3 module
