Black Screen on mozilla firefox and other windows

Hi, Newbie here. just installed mandriva 2007, at first it was ok. i tried to update, but then it like froze. so i restarted by switching off and on. now, whenever i open firefox and other windows, i just get a black screen. anything i should do, short of reinstalling?

im on dual boot with winxp.

1) In Firefox check Edit>Preferences>Content>Colours
Text=Black Background=White
Boxes to be checked=(a)Underline links and (b)Allow pages to choose their own colours.

2) What are other windows?

thanks. ive sorted it out. i had the 3d thing running. works ok now that ive disabled it. thanks for your help.
