X Windows shutdown causes black screen

Hi everyone,

Just installed Gentoo, and most things seem to be working fine. startx works, and loads kde and everything seems to work. However if I quit x windows, the console never reappears. I just get a black screen - not even an error message. I am using a framebuffer console, if that makes any difference. Even though the screen is black, programs still seem to be running, and Ctrl-Alt-Del works, resetting the computer.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance,

Mark Byers.

instead of quitting X, however you do that.

from a terminal type 'init 3'

this will stopp X and take you to a console shell.

I opened a Konsole window and typed init 3 as root, but nothing seemed to happen. No error message.

I also tried to switch to a console window, using Ctrl+Alt+F2 but I get the same black screen problem, with no command prompt. Even when I switch back to KDE with Ctrl+Alt+F7 the screen remains black. Sometimes I can hear some sounds playing that sound like windows opening or closing, so I am sure that KDE is still running in the background, I just can't see it.

I think this is probably a problem with my drivers? Could it be a problem with my XF86Config? Or my kernel settings? I am running kernel 2.4.24.

Mark Byers.

Try disabling frame buffer next time you boot.

Is there any error messages of concern in the X log?
The log file is found in /var/log/ and has a name somthing like XFree86.0.log

Thanks for the replies,

I have removed vga=foo from my grub.conf and rebooted. (Question: Is this what you meant by disabling frame buffer support, or should I completely remove it from the kernel?)

Now when I quit X I get a command prompt (a crappy looking one which fills only about 1/4 of the screen) but at least it works.

However if I call startx again after I have quit I get the black screen problem again, but this time on startup. There are no errors in the log file. Could be aproblem with my video drivers? Any ideas what I should try next?

Thanks,
Mark Byers.
