Basic Clean System Questions?

I always used to run a clean system in windows, I'd know exactly whats on my machine, and remove rubbish. Im the kind of person who hates rubbish, it just slows down your pc

Anyway, my question is: When I installed SuSE 8.0 it installed a lot of trash, even though I had it on the basic install with office - I didn't choose all the other rubbish, it just installed a lot of other stuff.

Anyhow, im going to install a clean Redhat 9.0 in a bit and I want to know if there's a setting so you can tell exactly what it installs? The only extras I want are Openoffice and a mp3/dvd player...

How do I install without all the extra rubbish?

Thanks in advance

There is an option at the package selection stage that says "individual package selection" (I think) just check that box and you can see all packages that will be installed. Once you have done that it will check all dependencies and let you choose whether to resolve them or not. (you shuld say yes to this)
