autologin problem

i want to get autologin enabled for root , I know it is not secure but i need to now.
I am using RH 9 , in GNOME I ticked the timed login for root and then i edited the rc.local file to run a program(mplayer ) hoping that it will automatically log root in and then play a movie, but it didn't, it didn't show me the X windows and i see whole bunch of mplayer starting up messages on the shell screen.
i even could not startx, xauth: error in locking authorigh file /root/xauthority,
can not create temp file for here document read only file system.
Fatal server error:
could not create lock file in /tmp/.tx0-lock.
is there a way to remove what i did and reconfigure the system to enable autologin(and how do i do that)?
