Ati 9.1 driver can't find device ?

Hi everyone.

First I'll post my system
Acer Ferrari 3200
Ati Radeon 9700 Mobile

Ubuntu Intrepid (latest)

The problem is that I followed a guide on ubuntuforums on how to install the newest Ati driver, and as far as I can see it succeded.
BUT after the reboot Ubuntu startet up in low graphic mode.

I can see that the Catalyst controle center has been installed.
Xorg.conf seems to validate the device and driver just fine.

Section "Device"
Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

But everytime I boot it says when Xorg starts that it could not recognize any device (EE) No device detected.

I have tried resetting Xorg 100% and I have tried what this guide tells me to do
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

When I do in xterm a fglrxinfo I just get

X error of failed request: BadRequest (Invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 143(GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 14
Current serial number in output stream: 14

What else can I do?

Thank you in advance - Carsten

Does
Code:
lspci | grep ATI
spot your video card? If not, you might try booting from a live CD such as Knoppix or Puppy and see if they can find your video card and install the correct driver. If so then check what they use in xorg.conf and try the same settings. If you get video working then you can always fine tune things later with the ATI proprietary driver if you need to.

Also, at any point in the ubuntu install did you ever have working video? do you have any evidence that your laptop isn't defective?
cheers,
jdk
