are there portable versions of software in linux

Hello I am using openSUSE 10.3.
In windows there are portable media players like "mplayer portable" from www.portableapps.com which require no installation & can be run by just double clicking .exe file.
Is there a similiar portable media player which I can carry in my pendrive & just double click the file to start media player on any linux computer.

I have not tried this but, since vlc is java based.. it should be portable (if you manage to store it with some default codecs).

If you compile a package statically(all needed parts in package) it would be what you want. You can figure on the static package being significantly larger (10X). One of the major advantages of Linux is that it is so modular.
