type su root

you will be prompted for the root password, type it in (remember it is case sensitive) and your login should look like this

i have to go for the evening. i'll be back 2morrow to check progress. in the meantime here are some useful links to info that helped me...

http://www.google.com/linux
http://www.linux.org/
http://linux.ctyme.com/
http://sourceforge.net/
http://www.onlamp.com/linux/cmd/
(i found this thru a forum search here at linux general)
http://www.linuxquestions.org/
(and of course you already found this forum so you're on you're way.)

give it some time it's worth learning. remember the amount of time it took too learn to use your first computer and it all becomes relative.
good luck, check on progress 2morrow.

I appreciate everybody's help.

I just went ahead and reinstalled Mandrake 9.2. It went through fine once again. I even got to connect to my DSL. Then all of a sudden, when I try to open ANYTHING, it either does absolutely nothing or I get "Could not start process - Can't talk to Klauncher?"

I'm gonna start a new thread for this, because the original issue was cured with a reinstall. I truly appreciate your efforts. It is taking a lot of patience, to go from a 2800+ AthlonXP machine with everything working fine to a 333mhz with a whole new way of OS life. I do want to learn this.

Thanks again,
Sean
