Yet another IP config problem ;-)

I'm no stranger to network configuration but have hit a brick wall on this one and would welcome some fresh thinking to aid my by now frazzled brain.

I'm running a dual-boot system with Win2k and SuSE 9.0. Until recently, I was on dial-up but just the other week I went for ADSL and opted for a Netgear DG834 router/firewall/ADSL modem. On the Win2k system, I was up and running within 5 minutes. To date, the SuSE system is still not working and it's doing my head in.

By rights, I reckon it should work:

- The hardware works fine in Win2k.

- Ifconfig and ifstatus both show that the ethernet card is being detected (as eth0) and the interface is up and running.

- DHCP is operating correctly and the machine has been allocated an IP address (192.168.0.2) and the other parameters, eg netmask, all seem appropriate.

- netstat -rn shows that the routing table looks fine; it's using the router (192.168.0.1) as the default gateway.

- I can ping localhost and the machine's own IP address, so the IP stack seems to be functioning fine.

- I can observe network activity on the router, via the flashing LED, when I try to get out of the box but I get zero response. I can't even ping the router. (Pinging 192.168.0.1 is not a problem in Win2k)

- I can't ping the SuSE box from a Win XP box on the same router (it's at 192.168.0.3).

So we can forget DNS problems or anything of that ilk for the time being. This appears to be a fundamental IP config issue. But what's left to configure?

Got it!

Read another posting on this site that said the firewall was blocking all outgoing traffic. Well, I switched it off and I can do everything!

Unbelievable.

What I can't figure is why this problem didn't occur on dial-up.

i have a similar problem at:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=257461

I have checked the firewall functionality of "iptables". When I do /sbin/iptables -L I get told that "Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)". INPUT and FORWARD also say accept. Is this the correct settings to be able to ping the gateway computer? If so, then the firewall does not explain the problem for me.
