Wireless USB Modem and Service Provider

I need to configure a Ubuntu 9.04 laptop for internet access using a USB Wireless Modem / dongle.

The user will be using this laptop in California near Bakersfield, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Jose.

So the requirements are:
  • Must work with Linux, of course.
  • Uses USB port.
  • Good coverage in the above areas.
Can you recommend a service provider and their applicable USB device?

I have the at&t silver streak modem and it is supposed to be compatible with linux. I do have a problem being able to download all the dependencies. I can not vouch for any of the other wireless modems. If you get a modem try and get it setup before you need to use it, in other words be able to network or wifi your needs. My modem came with the windows drivers on the sims card. But there was nothing for linux.
