Ok, I just set up the hardware portion of my network. Now I want to share an internet connection between windows 98 and redhat linux 8. I installed wingate on windows and can ping windows from linux but I don't know what to do next. Could someone please help me?
You need to set up the default gateway. Log into Redhat (you need to be root and run from the console (terminal program):
route del
route add default gw win_IP_here
Linux shold now have Internet access (but make sure you entered DNS servers for it - check if /etc/resolv.conf is empty - it shouldn't).
You can also use a graphical tool for it, I'm not sure its name, but try to run 'netconf'.
I have to ask why are you using the win98 machine to share the Internet?
I think most people would say to put the Red hat box on the Internet setup as a firewall, have it share the Internet with your windows machine. It would be much more secure than having the win98 box on the Internet.
