I have a cable modem connected to my LinkSys router. Connected to my router are a xp box and a RH 9 box. Both boxes can talk to each other via ip addresses, but i can't get them to communicate via hostnames. What do I have to setup to get my xp and rh boxes to recognize each other via their hostnames?
Log in as root and open the file and add something like this.
192.168.0.1 john.abc.org john
Where john is the host name of the remote box and abc.org is your domain name.
Do I have to have Samba installed in order to run the command 'telnet <hostname of my linux box>' correctly? Right now 'telnet 192.168.1.101' works, but 'telnet razorback' doesn't.
I'm guessing that's probably too much work for a home LAN with only 2 or 3 computers. It seems that my best bet is to just edit the hosts files. Thanks!
