Windows & Linux on LAN

I have a cable modem connected to my LinkSys router. Connected to my router are a xp box and a RH 9 box. Both boxes can talk to each other via ip addresses, but i can't get them to communicate via hostnames. What do I have to setup to get my xp and rh boxes to recognize each other via their hostnames?

Samba.

Samba will allow your winXP box to connect to your Linux.

Add them to each box's hosts files. Then use samba to share files.

Log in as root and open the file and add something like this.
192.168.0.1 john.abc.org john
Where john is the host name of the remote box and abc.org is your domain name.

Do I have to have Samba installed in order to run the command 'telnet <hostname of my linux box>' correctly? Right now 'telnet 192.168.1.101' works, but 'telnet razorback' doesn't.

Does ping razorback work? If not did you add razorback to the /etc/hosts file of the PC that you are pinging from?

Sanba allow you to share files and printers between a Linux PC and a Windows PC. To do that you only need to install samba on the Linux machine.

no, ping razorback does not work. Remember, that ping is being done from an xp box. Does XP have an equivalent to an /etc/hosts file?

So every host on my network has to have this host file that contains all computers? How to large networks get around doing this?

you could setup dns or wins on a large network to have a more "automatic" configuration. ie. only have to config the server.

I'm guessing that's probably too much work for a home LAN with only 2 or 3 computers. It seems that my best bet is to just edit the hosts files. Thanks!
