Why is fmask & dmask required to write to a WinXP share mounted on Mdrake SMB client

mount -t smbfs //atom/"My Documents" /mnt/Docs -o username="xx",fmask=0666,dmask=0777
The above is the line, I *have* to use to make my WinXP shares writable by a non-root user connecting from my Mandrake 10 box back to the Win box.

Root can read and write fine, even though the Win loging I've used "xx" in the above is an admin equivalent and the same name as the non-root user on the Linux box.

Can anyone tell me why these masks are requiered?

Also, what's the position (bit positioning) and weighting of the masks(I can never remember) ?
i.e. 0XYZ is X the owner, or group or other, or is it Z etc.
