Smile which protocol ping operates on?

I was under the assumption that ping command uses ssh protocol. But it is mentioned that it uses icmp protocol. Isn't ping is just a command which uses ssh? I am bit baffled here. could someone please help. thanks!

Ping was written long before SSH. In fact, it might have been slightly before Ethernet! I know it was WAY early.

The link is hard to find, but the author of the first version posted about the utility's origins:

https://ftp.arl.army.mil/~mike/ping.html

I'm not sure if that link is working still or reachable from most networks even.

icmp and ssh cannot be compared.
see for example here: https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/...network-layer/
icmp is a network layer protocol, ssh is an application layer protocol.

Very true, but there is no networking standard in use anywhere in the world that follows the OSI standard: OSI is just a teaching model.
