What file to configure for default gateway

Hello,

I need to connect a telecom rack with Linux machines to the customer's network. The linux machine has two network interfaces, one which is secured and used only for the internal network of our system and one used as Admin for outside connection.
I now there are two possibilities to configure a default gateway for connection to an outer network:

1) in /etc/sysconfig/network
2) in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth2.

Which is preferable?

the first file would be for system wide routing, the second for nic specific ones, so it'd live in the first file e.g. "GATEWAY=1.2.3.4"
