weird ping issues with mandrake and xp

ok, ive been looking for a solution to this problem all over the place for the past few weeks and cant find anything

ive got a network set up with a win2kpro, xpPro and mandrake 9.1 on a linksys router connected to the internet. im trying to set up some samba networking which works fine between mandrake and win2k. but i cant even ping the xp box from linux or vice versa. ive got a printer on the mandrake box that can print from 2k.

i hv no idea where to go with this. any ideas are GREATLY appreciated!

The first thing I'd do would be cecking
the cabeling ... like in swapping the boxes
around in the routers ports and see what
happens.

From your post it's not quite clear whether
2K and eXPeriment can see (ping) each
other ...

What is the routers setup? Is it dishing out
IP's for the internal network, does it maintain
DNS?

Cheers,
Tink

to clarify pinging issues:
ping AND sharing works

2k <--> mandrake 9.1
xp <--> 2k

no ping OR share
xp <--> mandrake 9.1

im mesing around with webmin abd swat and the xp box intermittently shows up in linneighborhood. needless to say, this is weird

as far as router/cabling issues i dont think its that, becuase (as i failed to mention earlier) my mandy box also dual boots xp. in xp, my sharing works flawlessly.

well as ive noticed with samba, some things just work and some things dont. win2k networking did. one thing to look for is to set sharing to share level. i originally had mine on user level and it screwed some stuff up. i now can see the xp computer in linneighborhood, but can't ping it or open its shares. does anyone have any ideas on why this may be happening?
