Unable to ping my Linux box from other machines on the network

I'm currently using a MEPIS live CD on this machine and it's connected to the network via Ethernet. I can ping other machines on the network (from this one), but from those machines I'm unable to ping this one - all I'm getting is timeout messages. I've tried from both Windows and Linux machines, not that that should make any difference. Yes, I'm using the right address from those other machines! All the machines are connected to a SpeedTouch 510 router.

I don't know where to look to solve the problem :/. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Well, I don't know exactly, but i think your problem sounds like to be from the firewall, or something is miss-configured. I recommend you to install the distro, because when it's installed, it's more stable and controllable.

Firstly make sure no firewall is dropping the ping requests. See what's on the iptables rules, if you have it configured:
Code:
iptables -L
Also there were one or two files to which I remember doing a configuration that prevented the system from answering to pings..argh can't remember which ones but if you search Google/LQ for documents on how you can make your Linux stealth (i.e. seem like it's "not there" if somebody tries to search it, send pings etc.), I'm pretty positive you can find the answer to how a ping reply can be denied.

Those are merely guesses, though..

Edit: yeah, it was the firewall. I've turned iptables/guarddog off now and everything's good. This will only be temporary!

Thanks .
