Angry Ubuntu and Mint won't connect via ipv6 on TP-Link TD-W9970 router

Hi - I am getting an ip4 connection but want to experiment with a Raspi and asterix with ip6. My isp is entanet (vivaciti) they have given me 2 ip6 addresses. I have been in contact with them and TP link and the router now says connected against ipv6. A quick tip, the tplink router won't accept short cuts in the address ending in :: you have to put the full address in. Entanet told me to use dhcp6 and put in my IP6 address. My laptop (ubuntu 16.04 latest) tells me it has an ip6 address but I can't connect to an ip6 site. I get these responses.

stan@stan-HP-Compaq-6730b-VC179ET-ABU:~$ ifconfig eth0

fe80::/64 dev eth0 proto kernel metric 256 pref medium

I have no idea if it is the router or laptop end which is causing the trouble. Gateway is set to auto and the router has picked up 2 dns addresses.
I would be very grateful for any pointers in the right direction as i have been struggling with this for several days now. my problem is that i don't really understand the netstat table and have struggled to find anything on this on the internet.
