Trouble pinging IP and urls

I am connected to the net through a WIN98SE machine using ANALOGX proxy. I can browse ok using opera or mozila. My problem is when I try to ping a URL or an external IP it fails. When I ping a URL it says unknown host and when I ping an IP it just sits there doing nothing.

I am sure there is a way of connecting to the net throught the windows machine without using a proxy but so far haven't been able to find it,

Any ideas?

I will try and give all the info I can.

Linuxbox
192.168.1.2

win98se "56K modem"
192.168.1.1

"resolv.conf"
search home
nameserver 192.168.1.1

"networks"
loopnet 127.0.0.0
home 192.168.1.0

"hosts"
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.2 linuxbox.home linuxbox
192.168.1.1 myone.home myone

AnalogX proxy is is set as follows:

proxy binding 192.168.1.1
all protocols are on

Anything else you need?

Also I would like to get rid of the proxy too. I have been told it can stop other things from working.

It is probably not set to be a transparent proxy. Basically (very basically) your proxy has to be able to act as NAT and less as a pure application proxy and you have to have your proxy machine set as your default gateway to be able ping other machines. I have never used ANALOGX so I don't know for sure, but having used MS Proxy, WinProxy, and Squid, I can tell you that this is how they behave when they aren't configured transparently.

Do you have a valid DNS entry in /etc/resolve.conf?

No I don't. DNS is server asigned when I logon to my ISP. I think that this is half my problem. I am also trying another program called NAT32 which is an allsinging NAT gateway/router for the windows box. Just having a few teething problems but hopefully it will fix the problem.t

Just put your isps nameserver IP in and see if that helps.

Thats the problem. The ISPs DNS is assigned at logon. It doesn't seem to be static.

Your IP is dynamic but the name servers will have permanent IP's.

This is the info on their home page for their setup.

Connection Protocol: TCP/IP

IP Address: Server Assigned

Primary DNS: Server Assigned
Secondary DNS: Server Assigned

SMTP Mail Server: smtp.dodo.com.au

POP3 Mail Server: pop.dodo.com.au

NNTP News Server: news.dodo.com.au

Start Page: home.dodo.com.au

There are no IPs shown at all. Has me confused.

Have a look in the resolve.conf of the machine that you connect through.

Thats the other part of the problem. It is a windows machine so it doesn't have a resolv.conf.

Problem has been solved. After numerous emails to the ISP they have provided me with the IPs required. They said they normally use DHCP so it is not required to give them out. Thanks for you help anyway.

Just like to let you all know that the problem is solved. Once the IPs that didn't exist were put in resolv.conf it all worked. Including Gnomemeeting which was the main thing I was after. I am using NAT32 on my windows box and I would recomend it to anyone that needs to access the net through a windows box. Very small, simple and powerfull.
