This is bad in linux!

I have mandriva 2006 on my mashine and my girlfriend mandriva 2005 so I need to save some of here stuff on my mashine so I can uppgrade here mashine to 2006. Ofcourse I thougt its easiest (and fastest) was to use nfs and since the distros are the same it should not be a problem but its accually much easier to do it against a windows machine with samba.

Im going to go for samba but it suck its not yust to do a few clicks to share files in the same distro.

And i have turnd of all firewalls since they are a pain to set rigth.

linux need some work here.

ps we do not have windows in the house.

I don't use NFS or Samba for that - I just create a tar backup and FTP it from one box to the other. You could also use rsync if the files are relatively static. Samba does not suck, it is a case of using the right tool for the job.

Turning off your firewall because it is a pain to set right is dangerous for the data you are trying to protect and I advise against it.

Lastly, Linux is hard because it is (usually) doing complicated things. Stick with it and don't expect configuring complicated software to be as easy as typing a memo.

Using NFS would involve about 10 seconds of prep work, I don't see what the problem is here.

If I am going to quickly transfer files I make sure sshd is running and use scp.
