out of an overabundance of paranoia i have resisted getting wifi until now. now my problem is thus: will different routers allow the other services i get to work? is there a router that does everything i can mod to open source? i would prefer to use open source software on everything in the house if i can.

You will probable get a cable phone modem which has a phone jack, and a separate Ethernet jack that you connect to your (wireless) router. I use a Linksys router with tomato firmware installed. I did so to disable WPS. If you want a router with OS firmware, check the dd-wrt website. One model of Buffalo routers even uses the dd-wrt firmware out of the factory. There is also openWRT, and others. Tomato is Linux based, but the web front end is proprietary.
